Controversial answer may have sealed Miss California's fate

North Carolina stood in pride as one of their own, Kristen Dalton, was crowned Miss USA 2009 April 19 at the Theater for Performing Arts in Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. However, the moment of the crown was not the highlight of the evening.

Dalton comes from a pageant dynasty. Her mother was Miss North Carolina USA 1982 and her sister was Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2008.

The competition, deemed tight between North Carolina and first runner-up Carrie Prejean, Miss California. Many were raising eyebrows at the last round when judge number eight, Perez Hilton, asked Miss California her question:

“Vermont recently became the 4th state to legalize same sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit?...”

Miss California ’s controversial response:

“Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land where you could choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, in my country and in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman…”

Many believe that Miss California’s response to this question may have cost her the crown. Others say that the contestant was asked a question and she answered it the best possible way without losing her integrity and honesty.

William Paterson University senior, Arianne Domantay watched the annual pageant with her friends.

“It’s always fun to see which contestant is going to mess up and more importantly which state she’s representing,” Said Domantay. “These girls are a joke. They’re all made out to be these humanitarian-esque angels when in reality, they’re these overly processed beauty queens who can’t spell the word ‘healthcare’.”

Every year these pageants are held to find the all around best from one of the 50 states. Unlike the Miss America competition, Miss USA does not include a talent segment. The contestants are solely based on beauty, their so-called accomplishments, and how well they answer the final round of questions.

Unfortunately, for Miss California, how well she answered her question did not help her win the crown.

Wow, no retorts? OK, well "Homosexual" marriage is not marriage. Carrie is not the elected spokeswoman nor an expert. I am, and I have no takers? So leave the little girl alone, and you others can take it up with me. I defend your right to free speech and a different opinion. This is America, we believe in freedom, so enjoy it. We also believe in loving your neighboors, the golden rule. We have different opinions on what constitues a "marriage" and so we will probably go on forever on that issue. So be it. But Carrie is undoubtably beautiful, and I believe she speaks truth, but the attacks by the media are sick, and if I were for H-marriage I would be appalled. i am proud the the right did not go on a Perez attack, for goodness sake I wouldn't want to be exposed to his "past photos".

PhillipP How is she a hypocrite? Do you grasp the language, or are you saying that she is morally unfit due to having surgery and posing for photo's that you deem immoral? Thus, your premise is that she's immoral and thus cannot judge someone else immoral? Ok, then your premise assumes "non-tradition" marriage immoral, otherwise your arguement could be that Homosexual marriage is moral and we avoid the "hypocrite" issues.

It's a travesty that in our modern-day culture that cries out for tolerance by both the conservative and liberal viewpoints, Miss California was not afforded the same courtesy or luxury to express her own personal opinions. She was asked what SHE thought. I was under the impression that the question did not require a "right" or "wrong" answer. That, obviously, was not the case. She has been ridiculed for not giving the "right" answer - the "politically correct" answer. It amazes me that conservatives are reprimanded for not being tolerant of leftist views, but this whole scenario reeks of intolerance by the leftists themselves. What's good for the goose, should be good for the gander!

I'm with Carrie Prejean on this one. Shanna Moakler or whatever her name is looks like Cruely DeCatty-vil broadcasting to the whole universe that Carrie went through breast enhancement. Hey Mrs. Moakler! NOBODY GIVES A %@#)(% WHETHER SHE GOT A SURGERY OR NOT. YOU'RE MEAN-SPIRITEDNESS IS AWFUL. If Carrie Prejean leaves your pageant, nobody cares 2 cents about your 'franchise' but we sure care about Prejean! What an awful catty woman this 'Moakler' is. Seriously.

Comparing her comments and the criticism of her, some of which can be viewed right here on this webpage, it's very easy to see who's right and who's wrong.

She was respectful. Her critics are hate mongers with a callous disregard, no, a seething and bigoted hatred of anyone who dares to have a differing opinion than theirs, no matter how politely that opinion may be expressed.

The far left is anything BUT tolerant. It is also apparently oblivious of the reality that not everyone will always agree on everything. If the far left can understand that, then it is so full of itself and overcome with a repugnant sense of supremacy that it seeks to contest the civil rights of those who disagree with it, and that in the loudest, most hateful, and least mature manner possible.

It is as if the only virtue held dear by the radical left wing is the ability to be hateful and insulting. Could someone please tell these mindless hate machines that this is real life and not the Jerry Springer show?

Cry me a river. She brought this on herself when she made her close-minded views known to the world. Do not pass judgment on others if you don't want to be judged yourself.

She is nothing but a hypocrite who poses for nude photos and had her breasts enhanced.

And thank goodness she magnanimously qualified her answer by saying "no offense to anyone out there but ..." But wait - isn't that kind of like saying "no offense to anyone out there ... but you'll have to sit at the back of the bus"?
