Sneakers are for more than just sports these days.

Many William Paterson students can agree that sneakers are among the latest in fashion trends. Jacinta Calzada, a senior at WPU, has worked at her father’s sneaker store, Carlos’ Sneaker Zoo in Paterson, and can attest.

"Most of our customers are avid sneaker collectors,"said Calzada. "They buy specific, hard-to-find pairs that most likely won’t even leave the box."

Whether it is a pair of Nike Court Forces, the classic Dunk, limited edition Jordans or even an independent brand such as Creative Recreation, students consider these sneakers an investment. Ranging in prices as low as $50 to as high as in the thousands, many people are spending the money on these luxuries hoping to make a profit one day.

Walking along campus, students are definitely representing the trend of sneakers. When asked why he loves sneakers, said WPU student William Dean.

"I’m a trendsetter. I love the idea that sneakers can showcase that and I don’t have to always spend a fortune to get the pair I want."

There are many online resources that a college student can use to get a rare pair of sneakers without spending too much money. Websites such as www.sneakerfreaker.com and www.nicekicks.com offer information on the where-to and how-to for sneaker buyers.

Carlos’ Sneaker Zoo offers an array of brands and styles for modern-day sneaker connoisseurs.
