As the economic beat-down continues to sap the enthusiasm of newcomers to the workforce, there is a way to slide into a choice job. It’s all about networking.

Networking is the simple act of connecting with people who are in or trying to break into an industry similar to yours. But it’s not limited to that. It’s about keeping your ear to the ground and getting as many contacts as possible to get that hookup that could lead to a career, or at least an interview.

Most people view networking as something that begins when you graduate the date with the real world approaches but the sooner you begin it the better. The tools are out there and there are several ways to make connections that could lead to future employment.
At William Paterson, the alumni associations also offer another networking opportunity for recent and past graduates. This connection is a helpful tool and the alumni events are a great place to connect with that one person who may know someone that could use your skill-set and give you a chance where you may have not seen it before.

Using internships to gain experience in your field also can yield connections. While an internship may not translate to future employment, it’s a hotbed for potential contacts that can only help your cause.

Websites like Ed2010.com is a place designed to help the careers of journalists through advice and a strong focus on networking. They also put together mixers for people in the industry to those who want to get their foot in the door. The opportunity to rub elbows with editors and other hopeful journalists is a tool that could create chances and interviews with employers who may gain knowledge from the brief meeting over cocktails and appetizers.

The internet has become an important tool in this process. From Linkedin to Facebook, your profile and activity can offer those who are hiring a chance to see what you are about. But beware of incriminating profile information and photos, which could hurt your chances as an applicant.

The art of networking is something that should be practiced at all times and will open up doors that you may have not seen before. Any way little advantage is necessary in so many ways and it could jumpstart your career. So get started making those connections and don’t stop even when you get that job.
