According to a March 2006 national survey by Student Monitor, a New Jersey research group focused on the "it thing" for college students, Apple's iPod topped the list, beating out beer. In 18 years the beverage was only dethroned once in 1997-by the Internet.

People are listening to iPods at the gym, during train rides and flights, while running in the neighborhood, walking to class, studying etc. iPod sales soar during the holidays, and we all recognize those stylish iPod commercials; they're everywhere.

And why shouldn't these contraptions be sweeping the country? Originally, iPod provided users with hours of their favorite tunes. Apple has now made a variety of iPod styles and enhanced its features available to bring consumers all facets of technology-music, television, movies, news, recording, electronic planning, game and photos.

If technology makes you leery, fear not-Apple products can be quite helpful for the not-so-computer-savvy user. All iPods are compatible with both Macintosh and personal computers. By downloading iTunes, a free program available on Apple's website, downloadable media are just a few clicks away from your white iPod headphones.

The Music Store page of iTunes offers entire albums, music videos and exclusive iTunes tracks from popular artists. Furthermore, individual songs are conveniently available for those who prefer to spend 99 cents on a single track to purchasing an entire compact disc of songs they may not want.If you missed last night's "Grey's Anatomy," or feel like watching a movie such as "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl," you can view all of your favorites at any time right on your iPod. Harry Potter fans can listen to their favorite tale on their iPods by perusing the audio books section on the iTunes store. Podcasts-news broadcasts from outlets such as ABC News and ESPN-can be brought to your headphones daily, free of charge. And of course, Apple has added favorite downloadable games for your iPod, such as Bejeweled and Texas Hold 'Em.
