It was a busy week for William Paterson sports once again, with 6 teams in action.
The homecoming game for the Pioneers was spoiled, losing to Western Connecticut, 20-17. With victory inches from their grasp, the Pioneers could only watch helplessly as the Colonials kicked a game winning field goal with seconds remaining, giving them the victory.
William Paterson trailed 17-0 at halftime to the, but valiantly fought back to tie the game with seconds remaining. Sophomore defensive back Harold Green intercepted Colonials quarterback James Williams, returning it to the 1-yard line. Sophomore halfback Mike Vicci then crashed through the goal line for the touchdown. Then, on the next possession, Pioneer junior wide receiver Kareen Moon caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback John Woodson, bringing WPU to within three points.
At the start of the 4th quarter, a 23-yard field goal by junior kicker Ricky Krautman tied the score at 17. But a 44-yard completion from Williams to Colonials receiver Yvens Louis brought the Colonials deep into Pioneer territory. Western Connecticut kicker Kevin March then kicked a 23-yard field goal for the victory.
The Pioneers football team lost another close battle the following week, on October 14th, this time falling in overtime to TCNJ, 27-21, in Ewing.
It looked like the Pioneers were going to pull out the win in overtime when freshman quarterback Bryan Petite scrambled for a 25-yard touchdown. However the officials ruled that Petite fumbled the ball on the 1-yard line, which was recovered by TCNJ.
The Pioneers defense played well, with five interceptions and six pass break-ups. Seniors Todd Gorski and Kyle Harkins led the Pioneers with 10 tackles each.
Petite, in his first college start, was 15 of 26 for 245 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore halfback Mike Vicci had 39 yards on 12 carries, including a 13-yard touchdown in the 1st quarter.
The two losses drop WPU to 0-6.
