For those residents who do not want or have the time to make the trek to Wayne Hall, there are relatively easy, low-cost options available right in the dorm room. Although gourmet meals will not typically originate from a microwave oven, there are some meals that can whet the palate of any hungry college student.
Ask any student which quick meals they commonly indulge, and they most commonly respond: Ramen noodle soup, Easy Mac or Hot Pockets. These two-minute wonders are relatively cheap and easy, but there are many more creative meal options available for the student who is willing to put the slightest time and effort into their meals.
A diner quality scrambled eggs breakfast can be made by beating two eggs and placing them in a bowl with two tablespoons of milk, salt and pepper, and cooking them for three to four minutes. Shredded cheese and tomatoes can be added as a pleasant variation.
Mexican style quesadillas can be created by taking two soft, flour tortillas and sprinkling cheese in between them. Cooking time may vary, as it depends on the type and amount of cheese selected. Serve with salsa, sour cream or other topics.
Mini pizzas can be made by taking an English muffin or bagel, topping it with tomato sauce mozzarella cheese. Cook for one to two minutes and enjoy Italian food at its finest.
A full coarse meal almost as good as mom's can also be made in the residence halls: chicken and rice. First get a box of instant rice, and follow the directions on the box. Next get a can of vegetables, empty the contents into a bowl and heat for one to two minutes. The final aspect is the main coarse, the meat. Chicken or beef can be made easily by placing the contents in a Ziplock bag, adding a marinade; these can be bought in bottles already made, place the bag inside a bowl and microwave on high for five minutes.
A snack of granola, fruit and vanilla yogurt is a healthier late night snack option than getting a pizza delivered, and it can be made in under a minute.
For the sweet tooth, options such as s'mores are available. S'mores are easily made by layering a piece of chocolate and a marshmallow in between two graham crackers and microwaving for 15 seconds or until chocolate is melted. Be careful not to cook too long or a marshmallow disaster may occur. And in that case, cleaning can take longer than the actually cooking.
