Spending time with family and friends will be how most William Paterson University students will be spending their breaks.

When junior Jessica Garcia finishes her last final of the semester, she'll be looking forward to a long break at home. Like most other WPU students living on campus, she'll get her room ready for check-out and then be on her way. Most WPU students live in New Jersey and only have to drive a couple of hours, but according to Garcia her trip will be a little longer.

"It's about a ten hour flight to get to Alaska," she said.

Garcia hasn't been home for Christmas in three years. She will spend her time with family and enjoy outdoor activities, such as snowboarding and what she calls "snow machining," something that sounds a lot like snowmobiling. Garcia also hopes to see all of her high school friends and said even though it is very cold right now in Anchorage, there are a lot of parties she can attend.

Bethany Olson, a senior, will fly home to California to see her family for the winter break. Olson is a distant learning student from California State University Northridge.

"I'll mostly be with my family," she said. "Being here is like my big vacation."

Senior Kyle Roland hopes to spend time with his family and also plans to work teaching drums, piano and percussion when he gets home to Columbus, Ohio.

"I'll work a lot during the day doing customer service," said Roland. "I also hope to try and play some gigs at night as a drummer."

Zachary Stein, a sophomore, will also be traveling out of state to be home with his family this winter break.

"I'm really looking to keep things simple and take it easy," said Stein, who lives in Maryland. "It will just be my Dad, my sister, and myself."

Chris Lutz, a junior, is excited to be going home to Connecticut. Along with visiting friends in Boston for New Years Eve, he hopes to be making money.

"I hopefully will be working for the Wachovia Mortgage Corporation, but if not I'll work for my uncle," he said. "You got to pay for school somehow."

Senior Eunice Adjei won't be leaving her home in Cedar Grove this break, but her father from Ghana will be coming to visit her and her sister for the break.

While many students see winter break as a time to slow down, others see it as an opportunity. Freshman Priscilla Sanchez will be vacationing in Puerto Rico with her sister and close friends. Brimming with excitement Sanchez explains,

"We can't wait to go down," she said. "By next week we'll know everything about the trip."

There is a school-sponsored trip going to Smuggler's Notch, VT that has a lot of students excited for the upcoming winter break.

"It's so much fun," said Jackie D'Andrea. "And it's not even that expensive."
