If you're not a communication major, chances are you haven't spent too much of your time at Hobart Hall, William Paterson University's communication building. But you may be missing out on a lot that the department has to offer, particularly its television program.
On Dec. 7, the William Paterson Broadcast Network conducted its annual telethon to help raise money for Operation Christmas Child. According to samaritanspurse.org, OCC brings joy and hope to children around the world in desperate situations by using gift-filled shoe boxes and the good news of God's love.
The telethon ran for 10 hours, starting at 2 p.m. and ending at midnight. It included a wide variety of shows, including sports and game shows, both live and taped. Each show had its own producers, and students helped out and worked around their class schedules.
The hosts of the telethon were Joseph Noe, nicknamed "Froggy" and Doug Smith. Mark Barragato hosted Lose the Remote, Jeff Heimbuch hosted the Improv Show, Jake Plunkett and Jeff Heimbuch hosted "Crisis: Darfur," Joe Sudal hosted Divide and Conquer, and Paulie Costabile and Steve Eccles hosted "Bleep this Show."
According to Jake Plunkett, the WPBN-TV student representative, the telethon raised a total of about $1,300 through donations by WPU students and local businesses-$1,100 in cash and $200 from online donations. $500 went toward a raffle, leaving OCC with $800 of the donations.
According to Plunkett, the raffle prizes included a $50 gift certificate to Casey O' Toole's, a DVD/VCR combo, an iPod nano and a sports ticket package.
"The $500 for raffles came from Allied Building Products Corporation, which knew beforehand that the money would go toward prizes to get other donations," said Plunkett. "We also got a $100 donation from Belmont Grill."
Normally the telethon is produced during the spring semester, but the station wanted to raise money for OCC's cause.
"This is our first holiday telethon, and it was a success," said Plunkett.
