Tired of doing the same old thing or going to the same old place every Feb. 14? Follow this insider's guide to celebrating Valentine's Day and your evening will sparkle. And the best part? Each suggestion can be used for dates throughout the year.

For the Guys:

1. The ladies expect flowers. Not just any flowers, but roses. And not just a single rose, but a dozen roses, which are expensive. Plus, they're boring. So, this Valentine's Day give her three single roses: one red, one pink and one white. Then think of creative ways to deliver the trio, and a reason for each color.

2. Don't forget the chocolate. Some women may say it's not for them, but most like it and expect it. Unlike the flowers there is no excuse not to pick up a box; chocolate isn't expensive and you can even help indulge in them with her.

3. Pay attention here: you should not even attempt to shop for lingerie! It's not your place and only leads to bad things, and who wants bad things on Valentine's Day? How do you know what fits or what size she is? This is my point exactly. Stick to what you know. Plus, this is her thing to do for you-if she wants.

4. If you can't get out for the night, or if your budget does not permit it, cook her something. She will appreciate the effort. Valentine's Day is all about the thought and it really does count. Have dinner at home, in the dorm or take her for ice cream. What you do isn't what matters, how you show you care for her is.

Gal's Guide:

1. You know you're tired of the same old restaurants. When a guy asks you where you want to go, speak up. You know that there is one specific place or type of food you like. Guys ask you what you like for a reason so don't be shy.

2. Please, please, please, don't procrastinate. If a guy is picking you up at 8 p.m. - trust me - he'd really appreciate it if he didn't have to wait another 15 or 20 minutes until you were ready. Especially on a first date.

3. Guys like gifts too. This isn't just your holiday (even though Hallmark seems to feel different). The guy takes you out and buys you things; it's only right to reciprocate. The gift doesn't have to be big; a small something that says "I thought about you, too" is all you need. Gift cards are an excellent choice. But tickets to a Yankees or Mets game will absolutely secure your place in his heart. Especially if you're sitting next to him.
