In an effort to make the William Paterson University community more health conscious, the Community Heath Club will be holding a fair in the Wightman Gym on Thursday, April 19.

The health fair will comprise more than 31 local health providers, encompassing all areas of student health.

"A lot of people think health is just physical," said Jessica Shields, president of the CHC. "However, it's also spiritual, emotional, psychological and financial."

Local vendors at the fair will include Spa 23, Sparkle Dental, St. Joseph's Hospital, Curves, the Institute of Therapeutic Massage and the WPU Health and Movement Science Department to name a few.

"Many college students don't recognize the effects that their decisions now can have on their future," said Shields.

Students in attendance can take part in a variety of health tests, ranging from bone density to hearing.

"The overall objective is to provide information to the students that they may not typically be exposed to," said Liliana Molina, vice president of the CHC.

In addition to health screenings, the WPU Health and Wellness Center will also be on hand to provide a referral service to obtain and secure future appointments of students for further tests and information.

Also on hand will be a personal trainer offering exercise and nutritional advice, free to attendees, courtesy of Spa 23.

The event will also afford students the opportunity to receive free massages, courtesy of the Institute of Therapeutic Massage, take part in Ti-Chi classes, presented by WPU Exercise and Movement Studies and health conscious give-a-ways, including condoms, toothbrushes, lotions and other samples from the sponsoring providers.

"We want everyone to come and leave with a well-rounded education," said Shields.

The WPU Counseling Center, along with the Passaic County Center for Alcohol, Drugs, and Compulsive Gambling will also be available to set up appointments for free counseling to members of WPU.

The doors open at 8:30 a.m. and admission is free. Giveaways and raffles will take place throughout the day. Prizes will include various gift cards for local businesses, which were obtained via donation from sponsors.

"Our goal is that we want everyone to leave with one resource that can help change their lifestyle and life for the better,." said Molina.
