Laughter echoed through the walls of the Shea Auditorium as students, family and friends packed the house for Mike Birbiglia's Secret Public Journal Tour.
Students made their way into the auditorium eager to laugh out loud with Birbiglia's impressive humor. "I love Mike Birbiglia," yelled a student as he raced through the door just in time for the show.
But before Birbiglia took the stage, students cheered for God's Pottery, one of the four opening acts of the show, including two WPU students and a couple of comedians who are also regulars on Comedy Central. God's Pottery, a Christian duo who uses their funny antics to preach about important issues such as alcohol and pre-marital sex, had the crowd almost in hysterics.
"God's Pottery was just amazing," said Melissa Hayek, senior sociology major.
The reported 580 guests in attendance were thrilled when Birbiglia finally came to the stage. His indirect jokes about President Bush and the war in Iraq had everyone rolling in their seats. For the next 35 minutes, Birbiglia shared stories layered thick with sarcasm. He finished his set by playing several songs on his guitar-but nothing serious, of course.
The Shea auditorium stood on their feet to cheer Birbiglia on as he finished his performance.
"The show was great," said Aimee Lesser, sophomore English major. "I was laughing the entire time!"
Mike Birbiglia achieved comedy status in 2006 with the nationwide release of his Comedy Central CD Two Drink Mike and his Medium Man on Campus college tour.
He has been noted as one of the youngest comedians to ever appear on The Late Show with David Letterman. Not only has he popularized the phrase "Cracker Please" and renamed George W. Bush "Whiffle Ball Tony," he is also the star of two Comedy Central Presents specials.
This event was part of Shea Center's Vistas Series.
