Let’s see. The Toyota Corolla’s nearing its last leg, and you’re looking for something fun to drive. Something that looks good. But something you can use everyday – a car with enough room for your friends and gear. And it won’t break the bank. Have no fear! Volkswagen has just the solution.

The new GTI is a solid all-around package. In the driving category, it doesn’t disappoint. Driving the front wheels is a turbocharged 2.0 liter inline 4-cylinder motor cranking out 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Motor Trend got this hot hatch to 60 in 6.1 seconds! A slick six-speed stick (the shifter looks and feels great) with a light clutch is standard, but a dual-clutch DSG gearbox is optional. With its two clutch plates, the DSG releases a gear while grabbing the next, allowing swift shifts. You can control the action via paddle shifters, or let the car take over in sport mode. The ride is a healthy blend of sport and comfort, a huge asset for any vehicle.

In the looks department, the cabin is a nice place to be. Blue and red gauges, a handy information display between them, and plaid (yes, plaid – unique or tacky, your call) bolstered seats are a real treat. Materials are high quality and feel good to the touch.  That includes the steering wheel, which is beefy and adorned with the attractively simple VW logo. The overall effect is understated, which is never a bad thing. That attitude translates to the wrapper, although there are a couple sporty touches. The grille’s bottom is painted red and the infamous GTI badge is intact. The standard 17” horseshoe design rims are catchy and fresh, as are the red brake calipers behind them.

Two doors or four? The choice is yours. Both are surprisingly roomy and can fit five people. There’s 14.7 cubic feet of room behind the seats, accessed by the rear hatch.  Oh yeah, and did I mention it’s affordable? The GTI starts at $22,860. Fun to drive, good-looking, practical and affordable. Now that’s my kind of car!
