Acclaim for In Bruges

The film is written and directed by Martin McDonagh and I was amazed to see that this was his first feature length film. Brilliantly written, "In Bruges" lacks a single scene that doesn't pack an emotional punch, whether it has you laughing or on the edge of your seat worrying for the lives of our two "heroes." Consider a hilarious scene where a skinhead punk attempts to rob Ray, Colin Farrell, but his plan is thwarted as his gun is taken from him and is then shot in the eye while Ray rants about his personal feelings about racism.
Another reason why "In Bruges" is so effective is because of the solid performances. Ralph Fiennes shines as an extremely foulmouthed aggressive crime lord. It's amazing to see how angry and cruel he is here especially as complications arrive in the latter part of the film in comparison to how soft spoken he is in films like "The Constant Gardener." Also needing to be mentioned is Brendan Gleeson as Ray's good friend Ken, who is also very good and has what I feel is the best scene of the film involving a certain decision that is made involving money.
"In Bruges" may not be for everyone. Make no mistake: this is a violent, dark, bitter film that has ending that may make some cringe, but if you understand the writer's message you will be more then satisfied with how nicely it all comes together. I really hope this film gets a wider release as more garbage, "Step Up 2," " The Eye", and "Meet the Spartans," fills the top 10 box office listing. Buy your ticket and take your trip into what is a dark, clever, and often laugh-out-loud funny little movie.
