Whether you're into alternative rock, hip-hop, punk, or gospel, you can find any combination of these musical genres showcased at many different festivals this year. Most of these festivals are held outdoors and often include other attractions such as food, films, art, and merchandise vendors.
South by Southwest, Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza are just a few of the major music festivals occurring within the coming months. With their variety of popular music genres and artist lineups, these events lure fans from all over the country and sell out quickly. Each festival has a little something different to offer their fans, but they're all still popular since almost anyone can get something out of these events.
South by Southwest
South by Southwest, or SXSW, showcases hundreds of musical acts from around the world on over 50 stages in Austin, Texas. It is a set of interactive film and music festivals and conferences that take place every spring. Formerly known as the Austin Battle of the Bands, SXSW began in 1987 and is centered around the downtown Austin Convention Center. Each of the three parts run independently, with different start and end dates. SXSW is one of the largest music festivals in the United States, with more than 1,400 performers playing dozens of venues around Austin over four days in March. This year, SXSW is running from March 7-16, with events such as a mini meeting entitled "What Has the Writers Strike Taught Us?" This festival also features genres of music such as pop, rock, and indie. Performances include artists such as R.E.M., Simian Mobile Disco, and Kimya Dawson. SXSW is an event where careers are launched, deals are struck, advice is shared, fans are created and media around the world fill TV screens, airwaves, magazine pages, and websites with daily reviews and reports.
Coachella
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, commonly known as Coachella, is a three-day music and arts festival held every spring at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, Calif. This event features many genres of music including alternative rock, hip hop and electronica, along with large sculptural art. During this event, several stages/tents are set up throughout the grounds where live music is played. Coachella began in 1999, three months after the disastrous Woodstock '99 festival. Due to Woodstock 99's fires and riots, Coachella promoters weren't allowed to offer on site camping, which continued until the 2002 festival. The 2008 lineup was announced at a conference held in Mexico City on Jan. 21 and includes performances by The Verve, Fatboy Slim, and Death Cab for Cutie.
