William Paterson University opened their 2010 football season by defeating The College of New Jersey by a score of 15-7
Sophomore quarterback, Ryan Gresik, threw for 185 yards, completing 21-30 passes and one touchdown pass. Gresik also ran for 18 yards on five attempts. Sophomore running back, Dawys German, rushed for 106 yards on 18 attempts. In the first quarter, German ran for a 42-yard touchdown to put the Pioneers up 9-0. The Pioneers extended their lead in the third quarter when Gresik completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior, Joe Muraglia. Muraglia, the leading receiver in the game, caught seven passes for 70 yards.
The Pioneers defense held the Lions to a total of 135 yards in the game. The secondary for WPU only gave up 17 total passing yards with an interception. The most impressing stat for the defense was the safety they got in the first quarter to set the tempo of the game and put them up 2-0. The top defensive player for the Pioneers was the senior linebacker, Jim Hamill. Hamill recorded nine total tackles, three of them being solo.
Up next for the Pioneers is their home opener against King's College. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 18 at Wightman Stadium.
