With daylight savings time in effect the sun will be setting earlier which may make some us a little more uncomfortable about walking around campus late afternoons and evenings.

The Safe Walk Escort Service at William Paterson gives students, faculty and staff the peace of mind they need by having someone accompany them to their destination during late hours.

Jersey Almonte, senior Student Patrol Officer, says it helps students and teachers feel safe knowing they are not alone walking to their car at night.

"We are located in the Paterson area and not everyone feels comfortable walking by themselves during evening classes so we provide a service to give them security."

The service began last spring when students and staff suggested they would feel safer having someone walk with them during evening hours.  The campus police department agreed that it would be beneficial and we should all practice walking together.

"There have been no incidents reported as of yet since the service began, it just helps everyone feel safer on campus," said Almonte.  "We get about 4 calls per week from teachers and students asking that we walk them to their car."

Safe Walk Escort Service hours are from Monday through Thursday 8 p.m. to

12:30 a.m.

Student Patrol Officers wear Student Patrol jackets, blue t-shirts and black pants.  They will display their University identification at all times.

The WPU police department wants to ensure students and staff with the most security possible so they feel confident and safe while on campus.

Student Patrol is located at the Student Center.  For more information or to request an escort to your car or on campus destination call 973-720-7400.
